Every dog on our list is unique and a little bit different. You are unlikely to run into any of these breeds at the local dog park and some may be even hard to find in their home countries.
On our list you will find singing dogs, dogs that can run as fast as a gazelle, dogs with extra toes and dogs named after flowers.
Here is a sample of some of the dogs that made the list.
- The New Guinea Singing Dog is a relative of the Australian dingo. They can climb trees with thick bark, are gentle and friendly with people and are notorious escape artists. They got their name because these dogs don’t bark but their chorused howling makes a haunting and extraordinary sound.
- The Azawakh is a rare sighthound breed from Africa. Like other sighthounds, they are excellent runners and hunters. Able to reach speeds of up to 40 mph, the Azawakh was been used to hunt gazelle.
- Otterhounds have webbed paws which make them fantastic swimmers. They also make great family pets, particularly if you have a pool or live near a beach or lake.
- The Black Forest Hound is the national dog breed of Slovakia. Created by cross breeding German Shepherds with Carpathian wolves, these dogs are excellent guard or police dogs.
- The Norwegian Lundehund is a spitz breed that was bred and used in Norway to hunt Puffins and their eggs. They are famous for having six toes on their feet instead of four and have an amazing ability to climb.
- It is believed that the Catahoula Leopard Dog was the first dog bred in America, in the State of Louisiana. It was traditionally used to hunt wild boar.
- The Peruvian Inca Orchid is an ancient breed that has been around since before AD 750. It has a hairless coat that appears in a variety of colors and is agile, smart, and good at lure coursing.
Even if you don’t own a dog from one of these rare breeds, it is good to remember that every dog is the only one just like it in the world. And that makes each one of them totally unique and rare.
