Do you like things in life that are a little bit different and stand out from the crowd? Something that makes people stop and notice? Something a little more exotic?

Well, we have curated a list of the world’s most exotic dog breeds, and you can read all about them.

If you are the lucky owner of one of these exotic breeds, you will have a pup that is as rare and unique as a red diamond.

Of course, dogs are not fashion accessories or something to buy just because you want to make a statement.

But having an unusual dog can also be a great icebreaker, helping you strike up a conversation or friendship with that person who simply wants to know more about your exotic pup.

Several of the breeds on our list have lineages that can trace back for thousands of years, while others are exotic because there are so few of them in the world that most people will never see one in their lives. Our list of rare and exotic dog breeds includes the:

  • Löwchen, or ‘little lion” in German, that was initially bred as a companion for the wealthy elite of France and Germany in the 15th century and remains one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. In the 1970s there were only about 65 of them in the world.
  • Brussels Griffon, a breed that is exotic not only because it is extremely rare (they were almost extinct after World War II), but because of its unique human-like face and expressions.
  • And the Xoloitzcuintli, or Mexican Hairless Dog, which (as its name suggests) is hairless apart from a striking crest of hair on its head and has been around for at least 3,000 years, originating around the time of the Aztec civilization.

Pups that are rare and exotic in their appearance or availability have the same basic needs as every other more ‘common’ breed. Even the most exotic dog in the world still needs love, nurturing, shelter, food, training, and structure.

And every individual dog, regardless of whether they are from an exotic or more common breed, is totally unique because there is no other dog in the world just like them.

Whether you are looking for an exotic pup to bring into your life, or you love looking at unique and rare things, be prepared to be amazed by our list of exotic dog breeds.
