Alice

Alice is a 9.5-year-old, 43-lb lab/beagle mix. Her owner passed away in October after a long illness. While her owner was in hospice until the end, Alice was left alone in the house for almost 3 months except for a neighbor who came 3 times a day to feed her and let her out. She has no one left in … the world to take care of her. It broke my heart, so I am fostering her as a favor to my friend who is the Estate Executor but cannot keep her. Alice will do best in a calm home with one or two adults all to herself. She is cautious around new people or places until she feels safe. It took her about 3 days to fully relax, but now she is so affectionate and happy. She is a smart, quiet, easy dog to live with and just wants to be in the same room with you. She is completely housebroken. There have been no accidents since she arrived here and she will come up to you, give a little huff and a hop to signal she has to go out. Sometimes she will just come over and stand next to me hoping I will pet her. She understands she can play with anything in the toy basket but has not chewed or disturbed anything else in the house. You can tell she was well cared for and well loved by the same person since she was 8 weeks old. A fenced in yard would be ideal for Alice. She will only walk up the street with me and needs to keep the house in sight, although I feel in a quieter neighborhood she could be encouraged to walk further. She loves being in the yard but will dig if you don’t correct her (she understands “No”). She always comes when called as well. Alice learns quickly and, more than treats, her currency is praise and affection. She wants to please. With an experienced, gentle but firm owner I really think her world can open up.
