About Essie

Please note, once completing the initial screen you will be connected with the placement for a video chat. Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved. If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time. We are a volunteer-run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. If you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone’s time if you are not serious about adopting this dog. Essie is a 1.5-year-old, spayed female Shepherd mix and weighs about 45 pounds. She is in a foster home in San Antonio, Texas and can transport out of State once an adopter is approved! If you have checked out any of our other dogs profiles, you have probably seem so many of them are saved from euthanasia at county shelters in Texas. Essie’s story begins the same way. We happened to be scrolling on Facebook, when we saw a volunteer post about her friend “Comet.” We reached out to the shelter not knowing he also was kenneled with Essie. The shelter gave us 10 minutes to decide if we could help both of them, as they were already in the pre-euthanasia room. We are really so grateful we found foster homes to save their lives. Pictured with Essie is her buddy, who is now in a foster home of his own. She has met other dog and had another foster temporarily stay with her. She is very friendly and polite with other dogs. If another dog engages her, she will play and is gentle in her style. She tends to read the energy of the other dog very well. When passing other dogs on leash, she is friendly. We think she would do great with another dog or would be okay as the only pet. She is currently being fostered in an apartment setting. She does have zoomies occasionally and it appears when walking on leash she would like to move more. We think she would really enjoy a yard of her own. This is not required as she seems to do fine in her current setting. If no yard, she will need daily physical outlets. We have no history with cats or kids. We recommend a home with kids 10 years and older who understand and respect animal boundaries. Essie does pretty well on the leash. She can be a little all over the place and can be a little jumpy at loud noises. She is fully housebroken and does very well in the crate. She loves food and her chew toys. She is crated when unsupervised as her foster mom has caught her chewing on a few household items. She can be scared/nervous when meeting new people. She is looking for a family who will be patient with her as she acclimates to a new environment. Although a dog is not required in the home, we do think a four legged friend helps her feel comfortable quicker. There are no current pets in her foster home, so we do know she is okay as the only pet. As she opens up, she really loves pets and to be close to you. She is really a very sweet girl. We hope that in time, loud noises won’t make her so nervous. She deserves a loving and patient home. We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown. We rarely know a dog’s exact age nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time.
