About Dixie

Dixie is a 1-year-old female weighing about 40 lb, and Texas Blue Lacy breed according to vet (or lab/weimeraner mix). Good with dogs: Yes, all sizes male and female. Annabel and Dixie took no time at all to become part of their foster’s pack. Dixie is more laid back in her play than Annabel. “Two happy wiggly dogs fitting in with the rest of the pack”. Good with cats: Briefly met her foster’s cat, cat meowed a couple times, Dixie put her paws up on the sofa to sniff a little and then jumped down to sniff other things. Good with kids: Unknown. Housetrained: Seems to be. Rescue story: Dixie and Annabel were rescued together from a high kill shelter in San Benito South Texas. Behaviour: Very sweet. She loves to give kisses and snuggle. Dixie and Annabel love their foster’s husband and follow him around. Dixie can be food protective. She eats faster than Annabel then goes to Annabel’s bowl and growls to try make her leave the food for Dixie. Saying ‘No Dixie’ usually works, though it is easier to feed separately with a barrier between. Compared to how she was at first she is much better, learning she is going to be fed. Energy level: Medium energy. She loves long walks and is capable of lounging on the couch. Training: Very treat motivated and easily trainable. Good on a leash. Crate training: Does well in a crate. She will go in willingly for treat or food but sometimes needs to be led to the crate. Behaviours that need work: Dixie has a habit of jumping up for loving and to give kisses. She can also be food protective but is doing much better. Ideal home: Prefer a home with another dog. She has been fostered in adult-only homes, so we are looking for the same, or children 12+. She needs daily walks, a fenced yard to play in with her dog buddies. We are not looking to adopt Annabel and Dixie together – Dixie is more laid back than Annabel and may prefer a more laid back dog buddy. All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, microchipped, and dewormed. Dixie is low heartworm positive, which is treatable by the slow-kill protocol for which the meds are supplied for a year. Low cases usually clear up in a year.
